We Collect Knives

We, all of us, are on a very long scavenger hunt for carbon steel knives with wood handles. We get them cheap- three, five, no more than ten dollars. Sellers don't think they're valuable because they're rusty and chipped but they don't realize that elbow grease and patience creates blades so sharp that you feel remarkably secure walking  with one of these in your bag through dark alleyways to your car after a late night catering party. It is this trait that I personally value the most about these treasures.

These are our latest finds after some loving.

The Best Comfy, Cool, Sexy Clothes EVER + Lasagna Cupcakes

I will never forget the first time, about two years ago, that I brought Matt into the EVER store on Melrose. I said to him, "You will want everything in here in every color.". He did and he still does, so much so that we have become friends with everyone at the Melrose store and we love to work with friends and that's what's happening tonight!

Our Food Truck will be parked outside the Melrose store tonight for their Summer Party. We'll be serving short rib tacos + sea bass tacos + lasagna cupcakes + farmer's market salad + strawberry trifle. Drinks inside! See you there!

For every $100 you spend at EVER (oh, it's easy to do!) we will give you a free lasagna cupcake.

A Corvette, Eating in Alleyways, President Obama + Blue Nail Polish

Once a month Matt and I take a real day off. It’s too difficult to take two, but we have managed it. We take this time to regroup and inspire ourselves outside our work environment, way outside. We love to skedaddle over to Palm Springs with cookbooks and swimwear but we don’t always make it that far.  Lucky for us that we live and work on the east side of Los Angeles so the west side with it’s cool beach winds and bohemian lifestyle feels far enough removed to count as a getaway.

Last Wednesday was one of those days and because I knew we would have the day off ahead of time, I prepared the night before with a manicure, for it is our hands not our backs that get beat up the most in kitchen work. For men, hands that speak of their daily work is honorable but this same evidence on women is just ugly. My mother always told me to cover my toes if I couldn’t paint them, and I have applied that rule to my hands if I am given a day of leisure.

With my nails as blue as the nearby ocean, we visited my favorite boutique of all time Planet Blue and then parked my Dad’s beefy Corvette on Abbot Kinney (top down, radio blasting Springsteen- yes, we are both originally from the 'burbs Matt and I). We were headed to GTA which is marked by no signage whatsoever outside of it’s massive windows that directly open up to a kitchen as cozy and rustic and expensive as many of the area’s private homes must be. Sides are displayed on a marble counter in mismatched ceramic and pewter family style serving bowls and their menu emphasizes a steadfast reliance on produce from local farmer’s markets. They're curing their own meats and baking their own bread but they’re doing it all in the back because this place is meant to feel casual and fast- exactly like my most treasured eateries in New York that offer no seating outside of stoops (NYC) or milk crates in alleyways (GTA).

I’m certain with such a thrilling menu prepared with undeniable enthusiasm for seasonal fare that it will be changing often so do try to make it there pronto style because I’m still dreaming of the roast beef sandwich we ate. Yes, roast beef sandwich. It’s served with soft, fresh bread and the most tender and rare roast beef to ever dance around in your mouth with horseradish hollandaise so this ain’t no Arby’s pick-up. GTA gets props for their pizza, and it’s really special, but that sandwich and the memory of it will linger in my senses until I get my hands on another.

For dinner we stopped at Tavern for two reasons. Suzanne Goin and President Obama who recently ate there. The menu was similar to my long time favorite restaurant Lucques, with simple yet perfectly prepared dishes that arrive to your table with such sophistication that you feel unworthy to dive into them and mess up the plating. Honestly though, it was the bar menu that left the biggest impression because we are American enough (read: Springsteen, Corvette) to still be seduced by a flawless burger. It’s side of triple fried french fries should be renamed to tempura mashed potatoes because that’s exactly the texture they possessed. I quiver to recall them. We washed our gluttony down with various fruit muddled cocktails which curbed the blow of our swelling waistlines.

Back on our side of town, we still had some room left to try out  Mother Dough where they’re making traditional pizzas with more depth than any other pie I have eaten outside of Naples. The dough was light and bulbous with little ornamentation- the patience and care that went into it's construction was palatable. This place is so close to us, we look forward to revisiting especially since it's walking distance to Bar Covell.

All and all we ate, we shopped, and I felt we looked pretty good doing it with (my) manicured nails and (Matt’s) Corvette, well it’s actually my dad’s Corvette but for this glorious day of R &; R it was ours and with the wind blowing through our hair we suppressed all concerns of calorie counting so that we could indulge and learn and enjoy from one side of the city to the other. A highly recommended, good ole' stars and stripes, livin-it-up kind of day 'cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

My Lovefest of DesignLoveFest

I am obsessed with the blog DESIGNLOVEFEST and I am not afraid to say so. I check on it daily for inspirations and ideas and recommendations, you should too. I had read that it's creator, Bri Emery, had just run a weekend class called BLOGSHOP where she and her partner, Angela, taught people how to edit photos and add flair to their own blogs. They give gift bags and take pics and serve lunch, and for their second class.... they called us to help!

Tal had turned them away ("we're blacked out!"), so did Kristen ("I'm sorry but we have five weddings that weekend and can not accommodate you"), but Matt, my supremely fabulous boyfriend brought their inquiry to my attention, "Babe, isn't this the blog that you are obsessed with?"

YES!! So we made it happen and did a drop-off for their second BLOGSHOP. Here's a little run down...

It's All About The Butter

ALEXANDER WANG for Father's Day

Today they arrived. They have nothing to do with food or the business of catering but their texture is so buttery that I feel compelled to spread them on toast. I want to strap them around my ankles everyday I am not at the kitchen which is on average twice a month. In the previous weeks, as I rolled dough and whipped up cake batters, I occupied my mind with precisely how much of my closet this online purchase would work with. Answer: sixty-five percent. Sold. Before I tore them out of their elegant box, wild and at the ready with one foot naked and bare, I paused.

There was only one person to call upon who would appreciate this splurge as much as I did.

Mom, you gotta see these new sandals. They have woven straps like a Mayan basket at LACMA. You'll want to borrow them. You have to come see them right away. They look like feet bondage, but without any Pulp Fiction weirdness. I think I may have to wear them to bed.

Immediately she was at my side. She watched me slip them both on and twirl around and around and then sharply noted that their small heel would prevent her tall daughter from towering over most of mankind. Always a bonus.

You'll have to comb your hair with fancy shoes like that, she instructed. And wear make-up. And you should sleep more, you look haggard. You need your sleep, doll.

I know, I know, I say to her picture as I carefully pick it up to put back in my vanity. I keep it tucked away because if I accidentally pass by it without any prompts, it rips my heart out.

I tie on my apron and wash my face. The kitchen calls and my dad will be visiting today. He's the only one who misses her more than I do.

Your mother would've been so proud of this business, he marvels, shaking his head. He says this every week he comes by, every week that we have a new employee or a new write-up or a new build-out or a new vehicle. It amazes me, he says. I wish she could've lived to see it.

She does, I want to say but I don't. I'm afraid if I explain any of it out loud, she'll go away and I'm not ready for that yet. Mother's Day came and went, and so did her birthday, just yesterday, but we were so busy with caterings from early morning until late in the night that I had no time to feel any tremors. Now there's just Father's Day.

Dad, how about swinging by Bar Covell for Brunch tomorrow and then Silverlake Wine for the Tasting at 3? I'll give you a kiss for Dad's Day and we'll hang out and eat Matt's food and make jokes. It'll be fun.

That sounds good, but only if you get some sleep tonight.

Sure, I'll even comb my hair and wear make-up.

Your mother always loved when you cleaned up.

I know, I say, I know.

*

Come join us for Father's Day at Bar Covell from 11-2 and Silverlake Wine at 3:00. I shall pressure the rest of the crew to clean up too but it is I who will be wearing the fanciest shoes.

Another Marvimon Wedding

Two Bright Lights sent over these photos from another recent wedding we did at Marvimon (we work at this venue a lot which we love because it's part outdoors, part indoors and has many charming and lush details as well as a fabulous open kitchen). My eyes popped out when I saw that a photographer took the couple to the nearby public library in downtown Los Angeles and shot portraits on the opulent grounds there. This part of LA has really reinvented itself, love that Two Bright Lights used it as their backdrop.

2. bridal party toast the day with cucumber margaritas

3. farmer's market salads on their way to being served

Superior Farms Lamb Rack

A couple weeks ago, we got in 60 racks of lamb for a wedding we did with Bash, Please. When ordering lamb, there is just no comparison to the family owned Superior Farms so that's exactly where we source quality lamb from. Frenched, tomahawk style, and cooked perfectly rare it is an elegant and succulent entree served over braised lamb spetzatino. This farm house wedding of 300 was served this dish family style with whole roasted halibut, seasonal vegetables, and roasted Weiser Farms potatoes. And yes, Lasagna Cupcakes too.... but of course.

Unbutton your trousers, folks, because you won't be able to resist seconds and thirds when these platters arrive at your table.

Dana + Quinn

When Matt and I started Heirloom (two years ago this month!), we would conduct wedding tastings at our house because we were sharing a tiny (very tiny) catering kitchen at the time and our shift was graveyard. It was pretty miserable that life of a vampire but it did make our weddings very personal. Over our own dining table with our cat sauntering about, we never discussed money or contracts, we  just cooked for new friends. One of those couples from way back when was Dana + Quinn. We traveled with Dana back to Virginia for a site visit where we stayed with her soon to be in-laws who we fell mad for. (Why do they live so far? We love the Emmetts'!) And we continued to plan with the lovebirds back home over barbecues at our house and theirs until The Big Day last October in Jamestown.

Tastings are now held at our kitchen in Eagle Rock with Tal presenting the food and the details. Most couples these days, I personally never get to meet but I know they are in good hands and am happy that the life of a vampire is no longer mine to live because we have our very own kitchen that we can call home (with a super fabulous new glass walk-in!)

Here are more pictures from Dana + Quinn's wedding on Martha Stewart Weddings.

Dana's stationary kills me, I die for it!!!!! There is just something about the texture of letterpress that feels like pride, the old-fashioned kind. It takes skill and care and rarified machinery to create it. Every piece of thick, voluptuous cardstock that comes out of Mr Boddington's Studio in New York is a little work of art that hurts to throw out, so I won't.  Thank you, Dearest Dana, for giving me several lovely keepsakes.

Anna Wintour + Lasagna Cupcakes

It was recently brought to our attention that Lasagna Cupcakes™ are being compared to canary-yellow Rolls Royces and Hollywood agents in the opening sentence of this month's cover article of Vogue. New Yorkers continue to sneer at Los Angeles, only now they're bringing us into the mix.

My heart beats thunderously.

I love fashion. I love Vogue and I especially love Mario Testino's photo shoot with Penelope Cruz. Her freckles are dazzling and the sun drenched casual posture of the whole shoot makes her look as ripe and delicious as the bazillions of strawberries that we've been prepping. All the more satisfying that Matt eye-witnessed she and her husband purchase our products from The Oaks Gourmet.

Struck as we were, we can't get nettled by the fashion giant's poking fun at our delicious lil' goey devils when considering the lush produce we get to forage from here year round. Cooking is what we do and LA is where we do it.  We have the ability to drive to farms and pick our own produce and we can grill outside in January. As much as I am enraptured by New York, it's style, it's culture and the electric thrill of just being there, no kitchen slave can deny that it is a joy to be cooking in la la land.

So if the name indicts our hand rolled pasta concoctions into the bubblegum pop culture of our home base, just let it please be announced in Vogue because I'm not sure they'd ever feature us otherwise and I am finding that this is the press I most want to hang on the wall  regardless of such a snappy appraisal. Let it be known that we whole heartedly stand behind the taste sensation and quality of our Lasagna Cupcakes™. East coast fashionistas, I daresay you would too if you'd only try them in one of those stilettoed New York minutes of yours.
